The photo film connects the aesthetics of the 1980s with today’s digital working world, reflectingon the challenges of technological progress in both eras. Inspired by Kraftwerk’s Computerwelt, it visually portrays the fast-paced nature of modern work – constant availability, blurred work-life boundaries, and consumerism – in the retro style of the 80s. Audio-reactive image sequences and a soundtrack reinterpreting the spirit of the 80s create a bridge between past and present, encouraging critical reflection.

The making of Repeating the Past — Die Ästhetik des Unerreichbaren
My initial research and thought process led me to the song Computerwelt by Kraftwerk, as I was searching for songs that thematically align with post-digital labor. I was immediately struck by how fitting this 80s track is for the topic. Kraftwerk’s mechanical and minimalist electronic sound resonated deeply with my vision, sparking vivid visual associations. Though initially bold and simplistic, these visuals began telling a story through an audio-reactive editing approach.
As I delved deeper into the context of the sound, I explored parallels with contemporary events, seeking inspiration for a classic 80s vibe. Conversations with individuals who worked during that era confirmed my hypothesis: the problems and concerns of the past tend to repeat and evolve based on technological progress, particularly in the context of labor.
I aimed to connect the 80s and the present in my work. The concept of building the narrative primarily through sound quickly emerged. Since I lacked expertise in music production, I collaborated with my friend Antonia Schmidt, sharing my ideas with her. I envisioned a sound divided into three sections, representing the 80s, the present, and a fusion of both. It was crucial for the sound to reference Kraftwerk without being a direct copy. We explored the “sound of the present”, acknowledging its diversity, and used a curated playlist to communicate my vision. Dialogue helped us determine which elements fit and how they would connect.
Once the sound sketch was ready, I tested its dynamics using placeholder visuals. I then planned and executed a shoot featuring exaggerated office scenes portraying modern issues with an 80s aesthetic. After selecting the images, I edited them in Lightroom, balancing the varied scenes and lighting conditions. To enhance dynamics and maintain viewer engagement, I added distortions and visual effects, making the looping images more compelling.
This process taught me the value of collaboration and the challenges of balancing nostalgic references with contemporary relevance. The project successfully combines auditory and visual elements to explore the recurring challenges of labor and technology across decades.
